Now Serving Organic Coffee , Fresh Juices & Wheatgrass

We are now open at 8am, stop in for a delicious cup of real coffee. We use Jim's Organic Coffee. It's a superior tasting coffee which is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. It's also Shade Grown, which prevents the sun from bleaching nutrients from the topsoil. Heavenly tasting!

FRESH VEGETABLE JUICING & WHEATGRASS
We are now juicing fresh, organic vegetables ( types of veggies, vary). You can also now get a shot of wheatgrass - provides same benefit as eating a 2lb salad!

Vegetable juicing is critical to good health because it is an important source of raw food. Each of us needs raw foods every day, and juicing is an excellent way to make certain you receive large quantities. You'll benefit from a boost in energy as fresh juice has powerful rejuvenating properties. Evidence illustrates that juicing helps the organs and the body cleanse and detoxify, which results in a healthier looking complexion.

Stop in on your way to work!

Nourishment For Queens Fills A Void

Nourishment For Queens

This place rocks and the owner Claire is uber cool. I went in the other day and got a super yummy berry smoothie. Sunnyside has been needing a place like this for a while. I think it fills in the void of our natural food selection here. Growing up in California, I was constantly surrounded with organic, natural, healthy food. It’s just a given over there on the west coast–Having a sound body and mind. Here in NY, the city can run you ragged and a place like this can help you recoup, especially digestively.

Check out the selection and introduce yourself to Claire.
I Heart Queens

Nourished on the Boulevard

Just made my second visit to Nourish NYC, Sunnyside's new alternative to schlepping things home from Whole Body.

The store is beautifully designed, with a restful, spa-like atmosphere and the kind of selection that makes a natural/organic-junkie like myself swoon. I spent a little more than I intended but felt the pricing was appropriate.

Owner Claire Carson lives in Sunnyside and was very helpful when I stopped by today to stock up on prenatal vitamins and a calcium supplement. She really wants to hear from people in the neighborhood about what products you want to be able to buy without using your Metrocard or paying shipping fees.

There's a juice bar that also offers a selection of organic teas that I'm interested in trying.

It's a welcome (if luxurious) addition to the neighborhood. I hope for peaceful coexistence with the more downmarket health food store just up the street. QUEENS ROCKS

Nourish NYC Opens First Location in Queens.
Natural and organic products now available locally in
Sunnyside for nourishing the mind, soul, health and general
wellbeing

October 5, 2007, Queens, New York. Nourish NYC announces the opening of its first neighborhood retail location in Sunnyside. Nourish NYC is the first of its kind store in the area, providing high-quality, natural and organic goods, vitamins and supplements, body and hair care, natural weight-loss, fitness nutrition and even a mother and child section. Nourish NYC offers a contemporary approach that surpasses traditional health food establishments, giving customers interesting choices plus a simple and fun way to navigate through the store. Nourish NYC demystifies and simplifies buying natural and organic products by providing sensible nutritional information, and personal attention to each customer.

Owner, Claire Carsen says, "We understand that people today are more concerned and much smarter about the types of foods they eat, medicines they ingest and the lifestyles they lead. They are looking for more natural remedies, and fewer processed substances, and are increasingly wary about potentially harmful ingredients. We hope to help make for a new experience in healthy shopping."

City Councilman Eric Gioia, says "Nourish NYC is a great addition to the already flourishing community of small businesses in Sunnyside," Councilman Eric Gioia (D-Queens) said today. "As the son of small business owners, I understand how important they are to the overall prosperity of Sunnyside. What's more, Nourish NYC gives our neighborhood more healthy options. It's a win-win situation for Sunnyside."

Claire, a three-time marathon runner and Sunnyside resident, added, "The Nourish NYC concept here was born when I got tired of having to go into Manhattan for premium natural foods, safe hair and skin care, organic children's products, and even gift ideas. Now it's available here!"

The Sunnysider
Neighborhood...
NOURISH NYC: Meet Claire Carsen, owner of a bright new store celebrating health and well-being on Queen's Boulevard

"To support, to maintain, to cherish, to comfort ." These text book definitions of the word "Nourish" also, exquisitely, describe the image and concept behind the cheerful new boutique health store of the same name that has just - and only just - opened in Sunnyside. It's a pleasant and very eye-catching addition to the concrete thoroughfare of Queen's Boulevard. The front door of the shop is flanked each day by two lush miniature pine trees and a casually propped blackboard on the sidewalk announces daily specials at the fresh juice bar such as the "Energize Me Berry" or the delightfully enticing "Strawberry Cream Slim."

What is particularly attractive about this inviting little haven of well-being, is the fact that it is run by someone who clearly takes pleasure browsing the aisles herself, always on the hunt for tasty yet wholesome food. "I find most health food shops are intimidating with their rows of inedible, illegible products, I mean, where do you start?" says owner, Claire Carsen. "I wanted to open a store that I would like to shop in, one that makes people feel welcome and where they feel free to browse and ask questions on their terms. It needed to be clean, fresh and memorable."

And that it certainly is. With an open plan, airy décor inside and shelves packed with a rich supply of gourmet, yet reasonably priced organic and natural body care products, Nourish NYC is already establishing itself as a wonderful compliment to the wealth of great food, grocery and dining choices that Sunnyside offers to its residents.

Claire decided to switch careers earlier this year. She wanted a change, to devote her time to the things she felt deep down passionate about: family, food and fitness. And what better way to do that than to open a local shop, round the corner from home, that celebrates all three.

While it's all very well, having the armchair dream about taking over an empty space, paying for it, decorating it, stocking it, marketing it, and, ultimately, succeeding in it, the challenge is in making those thoughts become reality when pitted against that discouraging and familiar little inner voice that says "I can't do this." According to Claire, who just completed her fourth New York Marathon on Sunday, "I think we all use the word "can't" too much. But when you replace "can't" with "won't," you realize that most things are really a matter of choice. Sometimes it's just not the right time and we need those mental obstacles there until we're ready to make the change."

But it's not an easy decision to leave the comfort zone of a regular paycheck in favor of the uncertainty and financial risk involved in setting up a new business. "I had a fabulous job in Manhattan, working for a philanthropic software company - very stressful and fast-paced but I loved it."

Neverthless, at an age where she had the confidence to overcome her own mental obstacles, she made the break. And even in these early days, it's clear she made the right choice. "I was worried I would miss the cool and trendy hip city, but this is fun and I'm seeing a whole different side of Sunnyside," she says. She enjoys meeting and chatting with her customers. "If I can't listen and learn what they want, then I may as well go back to my desk job."

Though she may have moved from the busy demands of corporate Manhattan, that's not to say neighborhood life has become any slower. Some things haven't changed. "The hours have been long - I haven't had time off in about two months!" The upside, though, is a renewed opportunity for some quality family life. These days, she greets the sunrise with a run or yoga, after which she can spend the morning with her 10 year old, getting him up early and ready for school. "I like that time we spend together," she smiles. "I see him much more now, and he says he likes it better too."

So what does it take to set up a business? For a start, she had to work within a very strict budget. "It felt impossible at the time but now I think that was a critical factor in making sure I didn't overspend on frivolous, unnecessary things." she says. "I had to roll up my sleeves and do an enormous amount of research to make sure I carried the right mix of products and create an effective brand identity."

She received guidance, help and support along the way from all sides: friends, colleagues, neighbors and the City. Hours upon hours were spent buried in books at the NY Business and Industry Library. Another invaluable resource was the Small Business Association, which offers free advice to start ups. "These wonderful, seasoned CEO veterans are brutally honest with your business plan, so that was a very humbling experience for me." she recalls.

Nourish NYC was the first choice of name because to Claire, the word simply means "a lot of good, yummy stuff." Her favorite product in the store right now is Floradix® Iron & Herbs. "Honestly, I didn't even know that iron was the number one nutritional deficiency," she says. "Many people are very low on iron, you can often tell by a general lack of energy or concentration, brittle hair or nails, dark circles under eyes and decreased endurance during exercise."

No doubt about it, the fact that Claire is interested in and well informed about the goods she sells, is certainly an added benefit to visiting Nourish NYC, as she is a knowledgeable guide to shoppers who feel the need for a little nutritional tune up. Or those who simply want to experiment with some delicious new foods.

She plans to host regular promotional events at the store, designed to nurture an interest in health and well-being. For example, on November 15th at 7pm, Nourish NYC will present a one-hour talk by a professional Aromatherapist, at which customers can sample a wide variety of oils and learn about their theraputic uses, plus understand the effects of oils on different people.

This, surely, is what local business is all about, reaching out to the community in a positive and spirited way. Having lived in Sunnyside for 14 years, Claire loves the neighborhood. "It's changing, many people left, but lots of singles and young married couples are moving here from Manhattan. I guess we're the next hub, as Brooklyn and Long Island City are beyond most budgets now," she says. And its thanks to her, and many other small business owners like her, that Sunnyside is flourishing. Long may it continue.
